Originally born in North Devon, I left for education and career. I first worked as a scientist and teacher before changing direction and attending Harrow School of Art.
Early work consisted of kitchen wares, all made in wood fired stoneware but after 10 years I rediscovered my fascination for ‘natural’ water and it has been a major interest ever since.
A Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain; and some years ago was invited to become an Academician of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.
In 2001 I was invited to become a national External Examiner in Higher Education for Art and Design.
I have, for many years, been invited to lecture and demonstrate my work to arts associations and colleges throughout the U.K. and overseas.
My work is found in several private and public collections – both in the UK and around the world, currently including the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Israel, Palestine, Hawaii, U.S.A.
An illustrated biographical Essay covering the progress of my creative life and entitled:-
‘Roger Cockram – Stoneware Potter’ – was published in 1998 by Richard Dennis Publications.
A biography of my life and work entitled ‘In His Element’, written by Alan Marshall was published in 2012 by Mascot Media. (Available from Chittlehampton Pottery and Gallery.)
